HACHIMAN - OKIAGARI DOLL

"The Hachiman- Okiagari Doll is one of the oldest locally made toys in the northern part of Japan. According to literature they wrapped Emperor O-jin 1270 A.D. to 310 A.D. when he was born, with a crimson blanket. Originally, people in this region made the doll in the likeness of the Emperor covered with the blanket in the order to wish their new-born babies good health and happiness. Since then, it has become custom in this region to give this doll as a present at the birth of child to wish them good luck and good health. The word Okiagari implies "inflexible spirit or perseverance", this doll is used especially as a New Year's gift and to congratulate recovery from illness or misfortune." (Nakashima Menya, 2-18, 2-chome Owari-cho, Kanazawa, Ishikawa-ken, Japan)

KAZUE-MACHI CHAYA DISTRICT

HIGASHIYAMA - HIGASHI CHAYA DISTRICT

In the town of Gold Leaf you can watch the production of Gold Leaf. The tradition of processing and applying gold leaf to laquerware is about 40 years old. At this shop you can watch the process and even do a craft or two if you make a reservation.

They gave me free tea! You can put Gold leaf in almost anything. It's supposed to be good for you.

OCHAYA SHIMA (GEISHA TEA HOUSE)
National Important Cultural Asset
"Through the long history of this OCHAYA, the name has changed many times. It is now called 'Shima'(good will of the guest house)...you are sure to find a waiting room attached to each main guest room. where entertainments were performed by talented gaeishas to please guests.

Guests in the main room can enjoy some accomplishments, such as shamisen [a traditional Japanese instrument], dancing, etc. performed in the waiting room. Perhaps no place else in the nation can you find the unique, traditional atmosphere or guest houses in this Higashi area." (Ochaya Shima pamphlet, 2011)
